They are designed to thread onto the Shrader valve to help protect it during use and That is exactly why I carry one on my front or rear wheel while I am off-road motorcycle racing or riding. It has saved my butt many times. Even if you have caps on your valves they can get lost when changing tires or just fly off. If this happens its not uncommon to get mud or dirt wedged into the stem and from there a slow leak. I have been able to clean out bugged up valves and get them working again 100 miles from nowhere.
